Getting started

What SwiftLing does

SwiftLing makes your WordPress site multilingual.

Installation

SwiftLing Pro is a second plugin that needs the free one.

Quick start

From nothing to a translated page in six steps.

The Overview screen

How far each language has come, and what needs attention.

Languages and addresses

Languages

Choose the original language, add languages, hide one until it is ready.

Addresses (URLs)

Folder, parameter, subdomain or own domain for each language.

Search engines and SEO

SwiftLing does the parts of multilingual SEO that belong to a translation plugin, with no setting needed.

Translating

Translation screens

SwiftLing › Translations lists everything visitors read, kind by kind.

The translation editor

The editor shows the original on the left and your translation on the right, one text at a time.

Machine translation

SwiftLing translates texts with a service you connect with your own key.

Translate everything

SwiftLing › Translate everything fills every empty text of your site with machine translation, for one language, in one go.

Never translated

Some things should never be translated: the name of your business, your products, places.

Separate copies

Normally one page is shown in every language with its texts translated.

Content

Pages & posts

Translations › Pages & posts lists every page, post and custom post type, with the state of each language.

Categories & tags

Translations › Categories & tags lists the names, descriptions and fields of categories, tags, product attributes and other lists of terms.

Menus

Translations › Menus is for the menus you build under Appearance › Menus.

Templates

Translations › Templates is for what every page shows around its content: the header, the footer, the menu, the site title, and the texts of the theme

Themes & plugins

Translations › Themes & plugins is for texts your theme and plugins show visitors that are not part of a page: a footer text, a cookie notice, a button, a tracking code.

Comments

Translations › Comments lists comments and reviews visitors wrote under your pages and products.

Forms

Seven form plugins, translated once and shown on every page.

WooCommerce

SwiftLing translates a WooCommerce shop like any other content, and adds what a shop needs.

Page builders and ACF

SwiftLing finds texts where WordPress reads them, so it works with:

Images

SwiftLing translates two things about images.

Language switcher

Language switcher

Where visitors find the switcher, how it looks, and its flags.

The visitor's language

On Settings › Switcher › The visitor's language you choose what SwiftLing does when a visitor's browser prefers another language than the page is in.

Settings

General settings

Content types, search in the visitor's language, and Start over.

Logs

What went wrong, and a report you can copy for support.

Caching plugins and networks of sites

Cache plugins SwiftLing empties for you, and how it works on a network of sites.

SwiftLing Pro

SwiftLing Pro

SwiftLing Pro is a second plugin that adds to SwiftLing.

Licence Pro

Trial, active, expired: what each state means.

Translation services Pro

SwiftLing Pro adds four services to Google Cloud Translation.

Glossary Pro

Settings › Glossary holds terms of your site and how each language translates them: a room type, a product line, a word your business uses its own way.

Translate again Pro

In the free plugin a language can be filled once with Translate everything.

Translate everything in the background Pro

With SwiftLing Pro, Translate everything can run on the server instead of in the browser tab, so you can close the tab and come back later.

Automatic translation Pro

Settings › Automatic translation translates a page or post with your translation service as soon as it is published or changed, without opening the translation editor.

Currencies Pro

Settings › Currencies shows prices in more than one currency in WooCommerce.

Order emails Pro

With SwiftLing Pro every email WooCommerce sends a customer about an order is written in the language of the order.

Translators Pro

Settings › Translators is for people who translate the site without managing it.

Import from Polylang, WPML and TranslatePress Pro

Settings › Import brings the languages and translations of a multilingual plugin used before into SwiftLing, at the same addresses.

Support Pro

SwiftLing › Support lets a customer of SwiftLing Pro write to SwiftLing's support and read the answers inside their own WordPress.

Developers

For developers

SwiftLing offers four ways to work with it from code.

Hooks for plugins and themes

The hooks SwiftLing offers other plugins and themes.

REST API for content (SwiftLing)

For a site or app that shows the content of a WordPress site elsewhere, as a headless front end or a mobile app.

REST API and AI agents (SwiftLing Pro)

SwiftLing Pro lets other systems read and write translations: an import from a translation agency, a headless editor, a script, an app.

WP-CLI (SwiftLing Pro)

SwiftLing Pro adds wp swiftling to WP-CLI, on the same functions as its REST API (see REST API and AI agents).
