Documentation / Language switcher
On Settings › Switcher › The visitor’s language you choose what SwiftLing does when a visitor’s browser prefers another language than the page is in.
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Nothing | Every page shows the language of its address. |
| Suggest it | A short note in the visitor’s language offers the page in it. |
| Open the home page in it | The first time a visitor arrives, the home page opens in the browser’s language. Other pages suggest it. |
Every page keeps its address, so search engines see every language and page caches keep working.
When the home page opens in the browser’s language
Only when all of these are true:
- the visitor comes from outside the site: a search, a link, the address typed;
- it is the first time: a language the visitor chose in the switcher or the note always wins;
- it is a person: search engines and link previews stay on the page they asked for.
The note
Choose where the note sits (on phones it sits at the top of the page, so it covers nothing). A visitor who closes it does not see it again for that language; their browser remembers it, without cookies. The text of the note, its link and its button can be changed for each language. An empty field shows the plugin’s own translation in grey.
